GET FRUITY @ MAGOR!

We're bananas about fruit!!!

We are currently in the process of making Magor a healthier school.

We have now launched a daily tuck shop...

Tuesdays and Thursdays are fruit only days,

on the other days we sell healthy snacks.

Mrs. Holbrook and Mrs. Chivers prepared the fruit before it is distributed.

Why are we promoting healthy eating at our school?

Healthy foods with less colourings, preservatives etc can help keep      children calm and focussed on their work!

Less crisps and sweets on the yard can help us reduce litter and help the environment with less packaging.

?Healthy eating is important for everyone, especially children, to ensure that they receive all the nutrients they need to grow and  develop. Eating well and being physically active will improve your children?s health as well as their ability to learn and achieve at school. Encouraging your children to eat healthily now will make them more likely to adopt a healthy lifestyle as they get older.? The British Nutrition Foundation.

How can we help promote healthy eating in school?

By providing a healthy start through our Breakfast Club.

Daily provision of milk to all infant pupils (with consent)

Providing a healthy menu for children eating school dinners

Offering after school clubs to promote healthy lifestyle

Allowing water (bottles) in class for good hydration

Providing a healthy tuck shop to save you time and to

offer pupils a variety of healthy snacks

Offering a curriculum and an environment which fosters

                 healthy eating, healthy living

On an ?Eco? note, we are trying to keep our packaging down to a minimum to save waste and the planet!!! Here?s a few tips to help us?

Use washable plastic tubs, not plastic sandwich bags

Put your sandwich in a washable box not cling film or bags

Bring more fruit and compost the skin etc in school

Re-use a plastic bottle for squash everyday ? save money and reduce litter!

We held a healthy eating event in November to help launch our drive on

Healthy Eating, Healthy Living!

Five-A-Day the Magor Way!

Magor Primary School welcomed celebrity chef and author

Sian Blunos as part of their continuing drive towards a fitter, healthier school.

Sian, who owns her own award-winning restaurant. held cookery demonstrations to promote healthy eating. Children from every class observed her preparing food from a range of fresh ingredients and were then able to sample the delicious dishes such as fruit kebabs and smoked salmon!

Alan Breeze, vice chairman of Monmouthshire County Council, joined us for our assembly and also opened the school's new "Fits Kids Zone", an area designated specifically for exercise and active play during playtimes. Members of the School Council had the privilege of being the first children to work up a sweat with skipping ropes, hula-hoops and traditional games such as hopscotch.

Magor School is the first school in the area to team up with a local supermarket to help get the message of healthy eating across in a fun and exciting way. Su Messenger from ASDA Newport held healthy eating assemblies and taster sessions where the children were able to try new fruit and vegetables and learn more about a healthy diet.

Year Two children made delicious fruit smoothies using Mrs. Phillips' smoothy maker!

ASDA also provides a great deal of the produce for the schools healthy eating tuck shop along with the local suppliers "Fruits of the Earth". The tuck shop currently runs three days a week but there are plans to extend this to make the school a junk-free zone! The children seem very supportive of this and already the crisps and chocolate seems to be being replaced by healthier options - even amongst the teachers!
