Information For Parents
What Is Forest Schools?
?
The Forest Education Initiative supports the development of forest schools. Here at Magor V.A.P. we have two teachers trained as level three leaders and a number of level one support staff. These staff members are also able to call upon the support of a local F.E.I co-ordinator.
How will my child benefit?
Children will be given opportunities to ?learn whilst playing and enjoying the great outdoors?. Activities are usually carried out in the school?s own woodland area, or at the local Magor Marsh.
Experience has shown that the children look forward to the activities carried out and develop a confidence in this environment. Many children see our forest school work as a treat rather than a learning process, and what better way to learn than through having fun.
Are there any parental responsibilities?
Yes, we need to receive your written consent for your child to participate in off site activities and also completion of a medical form. A parental consent form is included in this booklet and must be returned to school. Each child must return a parental consent form.
It is also necessary to ask for your assistance in equipping your child appropriately for the activities. (Please see the equipment section for details).
What equipment is necessary?
The school or education centre at the marsh will provide any tools needed for the activities.
Clothing
Please ensure that on days in which your child is planning to participate in forest schools activities that you please ensure they bring to school a pair of wellies, a waterproof coat and are prepared for outdoor weather (hat, scarf, gloves, old trousers rather than just socks, sun hat sun cream)
We will carry on with activities in the rain (although very poor weather will lead to cancellation).
We are lucky enough to have enough waterproof dungarees for a whole infant class to use and do not therefore need to ask you to provide this.
Please be aware that wellies are necessary in all weather types, and that inappropriate clothing could prevent your child from participating in an activity for their own comfort and safety.
The day before a forest school activity your child will be given a sticker to help remind them to remember to bring appropriate clothing and wellies.
Our main aim at forest school is to give all children the chance to learn in many subject areas, through exploring and participating in practical outdoor activities, in a fun and safe environment.
If you have any further questions please feel free to come in and ask us.
